Self-Sabotaging Thoughts That Hinder Happiness

Most people go through times when they have difficulty reconciling their thoughts with their intentions. When this happens, it can hinder your happiness. It can get in the way of your joy because these kinds of thoughts focus on what is wrong, what is missing, or the negativity of the situation instead of the positive aspects.

I don't like people

Many people, especially introverts, tend to focus their decisions on how many people will be around. They tend to make decisions that are not good for them because they don't feel comfortable being the way they are. Apply this thought to events, but focus on how you can take care of people in anxious moments. It's okay to be the way you are.

I Am Too ____

Every time you start a thought with I am “too” anything, that gets you in trouble. People often worry about things that no one else thinks about, although sometimes you worry about things that other people think about. For example, if you say you are too fat, too stupid, too something - to achieve a goal you have, you have to turn that into real steps that will get you to your goals.

That's what I will do when I ______

You've probably said it to yourself before. “This is what I'm gonna do when I go back to school.” “This is what I'm going to do when I clean house.” “This is what I'll do when I lose weight.” You know how it goes. Don't let it bother you unless you have to do that thing in the blank. If you do, just make a step-by-step plan to get it done.

I Can't Do _____

You may have heard your child or yourself or someone else say, “I can't do math. Or “I can't cook.” The truth is that no one can do any of that without learning how to do it. Nobody just jumps out of the womb and knows how to cook, write, read, or do math. Anyone can learn whatever they want to learn if you put in the time and effort.

Saying I Should ____

Have you ever heard that it is important not to “should” everyone? Not only is it a bad idea to create “should” for others, but it's a terrible idea to create it for yourself.

In the past ____

Thinking about the past and what someone did to you in the past, or how things were in the past, will not help you overcome your self-sabotage. It's okay to use the past as a learning example but not as an excuse for not moving forward. Remember that you are only responsible for yourself.

In the future ____

Just as you do not want to focus on the past, you do not want to focus too much on the future. Today is honestly all you have for sure. Focus on today and tomorrow will take care of itself.

If I were more like him/her/them

Never compare yourself negatively to anyone else. It's okay to look at what someone has accomplished, learn how to do it, and follow in their footsteps, but don't wish yourself away, because only you can be yourself.

Whenever you find that you are focusing on a negative aspect of a situation, try to turn around and focus on the positive aspects. However, sometimes you will experience a sad or negative time in your life; this is normal. It is not about the ups and downs of life. They are natural. It's about how you behave for the rest of the time that leads to more happiness.
