Be a Person of Your Word

You will never be a people person unless you are truthful and deliver on what you say you will. People will begin to avoid you when this happens. You must make sure that if you promise something, you will do whatever it takes to make sure that you get it done.

Of course, don't promise anything if you feel that you cannot do it. You see that this happens all the time with companies. They agree with everything that customers ask for and then are unable to give them what they want. That is never a good situation as people will react negatively when this happens. The company will not get more orders and their reputation will be damaged as a result.

Do not let this happen on a personal level. Be confident that you know what people want from you. Do not agree with them just because you do not want them to be angry with you because they will be even more upset if you are not able to produce what you have told them. If you plan to meet with someone, you should keep that appointment. There are certain circumstances in which you may have to cancel from time to time. That's fine, but don't make it a habit. Being a sociable person means being reliable.

It is also okay to expect the same standards from others. If you find someone you cannot rely on, you may have to break off contact with them. This may seem counterintuitive to the idea of being a people person but it is not. You are expected to be reliable and you should expect the same from everyone you deal with.

Of course, there will be occasions when people have to cancel appointments. This is normal and should be expected; do not be too hard on people when it happens. But again, they should not be repeat offenders. It is essential to be understanding but there is a point where some people will take advantage of this.

If you are known as a person who stands by your word, others will have no problem recommending you. They will begin to refer you even without you asking. This is one of the foundations of being a people person.

Working with people is all about common sense. It is about interacting with others and setting expectations for everyone you deal with. It is about developing friendships and working relationships. If you increase the number of people you meet, you will discover what works best for you and these people.
