Being friendly doesn't have to be a big deal. You don't have to make sacrifices or be a martyr to be kind to people. Remember when you learned about the Golden Rule - do unto others what you want them to do to you. It's as simple as that.
Being friendly doesn't have to cost you more than a smile or the memory of your manners. And it is easy to develop a habit of kindness. Once you start being friendly to people, it just gets easier!
Here are some suggestions to help you get started.
1 - Smile
Smiling is simple, cheap, and sustainable. It is also contagious - you smile at someone and the immediate reaction is a smile back. The act of smiling is relaxing and floods the brain with endorphins. As a bonus, the smile lowers your blood pressure and stress levels.
By making eye contact and giving a real smile, you show respect and make connections.
2 - Achieve
Do not wait for people to connect with you. Send a message, a card, or flowers to someone you haven't seen in a while. Chances are you'll brighten their day. If you know that someone has had a rough time, send a message saying, “Are you okay?".
If you have older neighbors, get in touch with them to see if they need anything.
3 - Offer some hugs
Offer your partner, children, or friends a random hug for no reason. So many people hunger for physical affection. And often children, as they grow up, are less and less embraced by their parents. A warm hug will lift them and make everyone feel comfortable.
4 - Emergence
If you are routinely too busy for social events, school parties, or your kids’ sports, step back for a minute and set some nicer priorities in your life. Give your time and support.
5 - Be a model of kindness
Think back to the people who have shown your kindness, perhaps a teacher or boss or mentor. How have they influenced your life? Incorporating compassion into your life allows you to be an excellent role model for your colleagues, friends, and family. Show them that kindness is a priority for you.
6 - Make some random compliments
Notice if someone is doing a good job or looking good. You have the power to sweeten their day by noticing and acknowledging their efforts.
